KEALY Major M.J.A. - 1979 Age -
22nd. Special Air Service Regiment
United Kingdom

Major Kealy died tragically during training in the Brecons Beacons National Park. As a young officer 7 years previously he and a handful of SAS soldiers successfully defended the Town of Mirbat in Dhofar, Oman from an attack by over 400 communist insurgents. This repulse ensured that the enemy force never mounted another operation of its kind in Dhofar again and was instrumental in the defeat of communism in the region. The war was all but over by 1976. This brave soldier had proved himself in the field of battle as a strong leader of men.

Lt. Col Julian Anthony 489891 2nd. May 1981 Age 37
Kings Own Scottish Borderers, 22nd. Special Air Service Regiment
& Commanding Officer - Sultans Special Force, Oman
Oman - Dhofar
St. Martins Churchyard , Hereford - SAS Regimental Plot - Row 1

Lt. Col. Tony Ball was killed when the Range Rover he was travelling in burst a tyre on the road from Zeek to Thumrait which is just north of the Jebel in Dhofar Oman. Tony had only just taken over as C.O. of the Sultans Special Force and was in the vehicle with Andrew Nightingale who also sadly lost his life in the accident. A great sadness decended on all the Special Forces personnel at Zeek which included many ex soldiers from the Special Air Service Regiment.

I had the honour of being a member of the bearer party from Zeek to Salalah and carried the coffin draped in the Union Flag to the aircraft to return his body to Hereford.
