T/CAPTAIN HERBERT VINCENT HOEY MC.

CAP BADGE OF THE RAIDING SUPPORT REGIMENT
Citation for the award of the Military Cross

241742V (T. Captain) Herbert Vincent Hoey attached to Raiding Support Regiment - 9th. August 1945

Lieutenant Hoey served in Greece during the operations of August to October 1944 as Officer in charge of a Machine Gun Section of Raiding Support Regiment troops. During that time he was outstanding for his personal initiative and leadership. His section was in action almost continuously from their arrival on 7th. August 1944 until the Germans finally left the area on 19th. October 1944.

In particular the following actions in which this officer took part are deserving of notice.

  • On 22nd. September 1944 he took his section forward to an exposed position north of Dhomokos and there engaged an enemy convoy of approximately one battalion strength. His section successfully held up this convoy for twelve hours inflicting many casualties and only withdrew when failing light made accurate shooting impossible.

  • During the period 23rd. - 29th. September 1944, when the enemy had seized high ground on the road from Lamia to Dhomokos and was making strenuous efforts to pass his convoys through, Captain Hoey's section three times penetrated the German positions and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy convoys.

  • One night 15th./16th. October 1944, Captain Hoey with one other rank entered the town of Lamia which was then strongly held by the enemy, killed a sentry, fired with a Bren gun into two truck-loads of troops and while withdrawing from the town, stopped to attack with hand grenades a billet occupied by German officers. The known results of this patrol were the destruction of two trucks and five Germans certainly killed.

  • This officer then went north with a force commanded by Colonel Jellicoe and while in command of two sections of machine guns, he showed the greatest coolness and courage in action near Kozani.

  • On 27th. October 1944 his section moved in under heavy fire and covered the withdrawal of a company of the 4th. Parachute Battalion.
