LEONARD WILLIAM MAINE - BIRTHDAY PARTY

On Parade

On the 6th. April 2001 Leonard William Maine sadly passed away at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. He was cremated at the Central London Crematorium at 1 pm. on the 17th. April 2001.

They say "Old sailors never die, they just gently float away" , and this is true of "Sailor" as he was universally known to everyone he came into contact with.

A true character who won over the hearts of many at the Queens Arms in Hereford and other watering holes, where his appearance was aways a colourful event as he proudly paraded his Chelsea Pensioners Uniform and array of medals.

His ashes were scattered during an evening service at the home of 22nd. Special Air Service Regiment on Saturday 28th. July 2001. This was well attended by many of his former regimental colleagues and friends from Hereford.

A poppy wreath was laid on behalf of The Allied Special Forces Association by his friends.

"Sailor" was born in Norwich, Norfolk and during the Second World War served with both the Merchant Navy and the Royal Navy.

His post war service led him into the Parachute Regiment and then 22nd. Special Air Service Regiment.

He was accepted as an In-Pensioner at the Royal Hospital Chelsea where he ended his days.

All in all a remarkable life which should not go unnoticed!

Secretary
