Bearded Brigands - The Original Special Forces

The elite Long Range Desert Group operated behind enemy lines and Frank Jopling was with them from the first sortie. His diary is the most comprehensive published account of the daily activities of these military swashbucklers who played a vital part in the Eighth Army's victory over Axis forces in North Africa during World War II.

Trooper Jopling himself became something of a wartime celebrity after his dairy was discovered. Extracts appeared in the British Media, he was the cover story in "Everbody's" magazine and his personal readings from the diaries were broadcast in his home country, New Zealand.

The Kiwi Scorpions

Tells the story of a small but elite band of men brought together by the tumult of a world at war to pit their strength and endurance against a common enemy - an enemy that was not always of the human kind. This band of men became the Long Range Desert Group. This book focuses on the New Zealanders who served with the LRDG and were known as the "Kiwi Scorpions". The desert is an unforgiving place to those who are slow to adapt but these men became like their namesakes and used its inhospitable terrain to gain advantage over their foe. This is their story as retold through their diaries and from the personal recollections of a small number of surviving veterans.

The Long Range Desert Group

As Sir John Keegan writes in his Introduction to this classic book, the Long Range Desert Group was pre-eminent among Special Force units raised to carry war to the enemy's flanks and weak points, initially in North Africa and then Italy, Greece and Albania.

We are proud to reprint this acclaimed story to mark the 60th. Anniversary of the LRDG (June 2000). Operating deep behind enemy lines, the units contribution was singled out by Rommel as being the most effective. We read of feats of great endurance, daring and bravery and of the exceptionally colourful characters who performed them.
