THE FALKLAND ISLANDS MEMORIAL

THE FALKLAND ISLANDS MEMORIAL - ST.MARTINS CHURCHYARD - HEREFORD

On the 2nd. April 1982 the armed forces of Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. (10 weeks later they surrendered.) Within days of the invasion patrols from 22nd. Special Air Service and the Royal Marines Special Boat Squadron were deployed.

Very soon the island of South Georgia was retaken, Pebble Island raided with many aircraft destroyed and patrols were ashore on the Islands gaining vital intelligence which led to freedom for the Falkland Islanders.

On the 19th. May 1982 whilst carrying out a ship to ship transfer of SAS soldiers, a Sea King helicopter crashed into the sea with many brave souls on board. On the 10th. June 1982 an SAS observation post above Port Howard in West Falkland was discovered by Argentine forces.

As a result of these two incidents the SAS lost many fine soldiers and the RAF very brave aircrew. A very sad loss to all their families and everyone who served with them in peace and conflict.
